CENTER FOR
GRIEVING CHILDREN

Where Families Find Hope & Love

Overview

The Center for Grieving Children helps children and families
who are struggling with loss due to death.

CFGC is a nonprofit organization that provides a safe space, loving peer support, outreach, and education to grieving children, teens, families and the community. With locations in Portland and Sanford, and virtual capacities as well, they provide completely free-of-charge services for children, teens,
young adults, and their family members throughout southern Maine.

The center is based in Portland, Maine, and annually serves more than 4,000 grieving children, teens, families, and young adults through peer support, outreach, and education. Since its founding in 1987,
CFGC has served more than 66,000 children, teens, and their families. Last year, Center volunteers contributed 24,000 hours of support and have grown into a highly respected and hugely
appreciated service to the greater Portland community and surrounding areas.

Services Offered

Grief hurts. The Center can help.

The Center for Grieving Children offers five different programs and services that address different types of grief and supply different kinds of help and resources. Groups meet at our Portland and Sanford locations, and we provide support over the phone as well.

VIRTUAL TOUR

The Center for Grieving Children was founded in 1987 by Portland, Maine resident Bill Hemmens, following the death of his sister. In trying to find help and support for his niece Erin, Bill recognized that children need peers and caring adults to support them through their grief, because death profoundly affects every aspect of their lives.
